Support for 16-25 year olds

There are many life changes for 16-25-year-olds, whether that be transitioning from school to college, college to university, work, parenthood, or stress at home. It’s important young people know that there is lots of support available to them in Portsmouth.

It’s normal to experience different emotions and it can help to talk about how you’re feeling. Here you can find local support and materials to support you, no matter what stage of life you’re at and what you’re going through.

Self-help

Many of us will go through feelings of worry, stress, sadness or confusion in our lives, just like we all get sick occasionally. But it’s important to know the help available to you during these times.

Self-help resources offer tips and guidance that can help you calm your mind and body in times of stress. Whether that be a blog post you can relate to, or a video guiding you through a breathing exercise.

Getting help

We all go through times of sadness or stress but when it starts to affect your daily life and relationships, it could mean you are struggling with your mental health.

You may be feeling:

  • Anxious or nervous
  • Stressed or overwhelmed
  • Feelings of anger, irritable or have a short temper
  • Loneliness
  • Low mood or depressed
  • Having issues with eating or sleeping

There are different ways you can be helped, depending on how you would like to talk to someone whether that be over the phone, online or face-to-face.

Kooth

Kooth is a free online counselling and wellbeing support service, which is available to all young people aged 11-25 in Portsmouth.

Young people can chat to Kooth’s helpful team via message or live chat. They can also join conversations on discussion boards, write their own daily journal and read helpful articles featuring personal experiences and tips.

There are no waiting lists or referrals, just visit Kooth.com and register anonymously.  The site is available 24/7 with counselling available 12pm – 10pm on weekdays and 6pm – 10pm on weekends.

NHS Talking Therapies

NHS Talking Therapies are a team of therapists and researchers specialising in the treatment of common mental health difficulties. If you’re struggling with low mood or anxiety, or with a physical condition such as chronic pain or fatigue, the team provides therapy to help you cope and feel better.

You can access the free and confidential service if you’re aged 16 or over, living in Portsmouth, and if you’re registered with a GP Practice in the city.

The Portsmouth Mental Health Hub

If you are not sure about what support might be right for you and would like to speak to someone you can call the Portsmouth Mental Health Hub on 0300 123 6621 (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm)

The phoneline is run by a team of friendly, fully trained call handlers who will connect you to the right support for you. This could be support over the phone, an appointment with other services such as NHS Talking Therapies or Positive Minds or an offer to connect you with other local organisations.

Anyone aged 16+ can call and get support for their mental health. You do not need to go through your GP to access this service.

Your GP

If you are worried about your mental health, then you can contact GP. They can discuss options for support and make referrals. Your GP can also prescribe medication and talk to you about any worries you may have about this.

If you’re a local college or university student or you’ve recently left school, there’s lots of support on hand for you.

Motiv8

Motiv8 supports young people aged 9 – 19 years old (up to age 25 for those living with SEND) through one-to-one mentoring, health and wellbeing hubs and skills sessions, they offer safe places where young people can be supported building on strengths and providing positive ‘life chances’ to help all we work with to thrive.

The Student Wellbeing Service provides free mental health support, counselling and wellbeing support to University of Portsmouth students.

We offer one-to-one support like daily advice sessions and counselling, resources and guides for help with different issues, and workshops, courses, events and support groups to connect with others.

The Student Wellbeing Service provides free mental health support, counselling and wellbeing support to the City of Portsmouth College students.

We offer one-to-one support, drop-in sessions and counselling as well as free sanitary products across all campuses. We run wellbeing art sessions to help anxious students, the college also offers signposting of relevant outside agencies who can support the students needs.

‘The Student Health & Wellbeing Service provides support in many different areas, free mental health support from our counsellor and wellbeing support to students from our Student Progress Mentors at Alton, South Downs and Havant Campuses.

We offer one-to-one support from our Student Progress Mentors who offer information, advice and guidance and can put you in touch with specialist help using external agencies or a referral to the college counsellor. A Sexual Health nurse is on site every week during term time.

Becoming a new parent can be a wonderful time but can also be a really difficult time. It is natural for mothers and birthing parents to experience a range of emotions during pregnancy and after giving birth.

For some, these feelings pass but for others these difficult feelings might start to impact on day-to-day life.

Our ‘Support for new parents’ pages have lots of helpful information, and these two organisations might be worth contacting.

Families in Mind

Families in Mind aims to support parents in the transition to parenthood, improve parents’ emotional wellbeing and early relationships. The service supports families experiencing mild to moderate difficulties who would like to improve coping and overcome challenges.

The team includes Specialist Health Visitors, Community Nursery Nurses and a Mental Health Nurse. They offer a range of support, delivered flexibly, both one-to-one or via a group in Portsmouth’s family hubs, your own home or other community site.

You can find out more and self-refer or attend one of their Chat and Play sessions, every Tuesday, 9.30-11.30am, at Somerstown Family Hub.

Portsmouth Family Hubs

All families need some help sometimes and parenting support is available at the Portsmouth Family Hubs located at Buckland, Paulsgrove, Milton, Somerstown and Northern Parade.

If you live in Portsmouth, you can access free courses, workshops and activities at your local hub. From Young Mums Club to weekly Stay and Play sessions, the family hubs have all the support you could need.

The Drug and Alcohol Support Service (DASS) works with young people under 25 in Portsmouth who are using drugs. The service is free and confidential.
