This week is Mental Health Awareness Week (13 to 19 of May), and the theme this year is ‘movement: moving more for our mental health’. In line with this theme, the Portsmouth Mental Health Hub team will be on the move across Portsmouth throughout the week, popping up at various events to offer support and advice to residents.

Movement is important for our mental health, not only does it reduce stress and anxiety but taking time to move your body regularly gives you an opportunity to take your mind off something that is bothering you or may be causing you stress.

Making time for movement doesn’t have to be complicated, and it can be incorporated into daily activities such as walking the long route home, chair exercises while watching tv or dancing in kitchen while the kettle is boiling.

These simple adjustments to your daily routine will support your mental health and raise your ‘happy hormones’ to improve your day. Simple advice like this can go a long way for someone struggling with their mental health, and the team of friendly experts at the Portsmouth Mental Health Hub can offer advice and connect you with the right services for you.

The team understand that it is not always easy to reach out when things feel tough, and so are taking the opportunity to get out into the community and offer support.

The team are attending the following events throughout this Mental Health Awareness Week:

  • Live Well event – Tuesday 14 May 9-10.30am at the Landport Community Centre (PO1 1JD)
  • Community Cuppa social Group – Tuesday 14 May, 1-2.30pm at the Paulsgrove Community Centre (PO6 4JB)
  • Men’s Group Paulsgrove – Wednesday 15 May, 11-12.30pm at the Paulsgrove Library (PO6 4JB)
